Every year, the PGA Tour hosts their annual Wyndham Championship, a professional golf competition, in North Carolina. However, it was initially known as the Greater Greensboro Open, as it was and still is played in Greensboro every year.

Wyndham Championship 2024 History

The Wyndham Championship was founded in 1938. Initially, it started as a tournament played every April or May, but after a few decades of the tournament, it was moved to a late season in 2003 and started taking place in August instead.

The Wyndham Championship has been one of a kind; for instance, Sam Snead set the PGA record in 1965 by winning the title at the age of 52! That's not it, the Wyndham Championship broke records and racial barriers when Charlie Sifford became the first African American to compete in the tournament and was in the lead for and after the first round, but he ended up tying for fourth! Soon, in 2007, there was yet another massive change in the game. In 2007, Wyndham Hotels became the sponsor of the tournament and changed the pattern of the game as well by making sure the players in the tournament get the final chance to qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs. Soon after getting a new sponsor, the prize money started going up! For instance, a massive change and jump was seen in 2015, when the winner's share was $972,000 out of the $5.4 million total.
