In a bizarre turn of events on Sunday, Matt Kuchar decided that he would opt for a Monday finish at the Wyndham Championship with just one hole left to play. Aaron Rai had already been declared the winner of the 2024 Wyndham Championship but Kuchar decided that he would not play after darkness had falled on the Sedgefield course.
The darkness horn was not blown, but instead, the tournament officials went and personally told Kuchar, Greyserman and Chad Ramey that the tournament was going to be suspended. This grouping was the last one of the Wyndham Championship, and they had to only play the 18th hole in order to finish off their respective campaigns.
However, Matt Kuchar decided to lead by example and opt to finish his hole on Monday instead. He hoped that Max Greyserman, who was sitting in second place, would also take his advise. Speaking via GolfWeek, Kuchar explained his decision and how it would impact Greyserman:
“I was trying to set an example for Max. We were so far past where we should’ve stopped playing. We saw what Max did on hole 16; they should’ve blown the horn there. I feel bad, the poor kid should’ve won this tournament. By me not playing, it may show Max he has an important shot to hit.”
It was reported that Matt Kuchar even went up to Greyserman and asked him to follow his lead.
"“I’m done maybe you should follow my lead," he said.
However, Greyserman decided to continue playing and finish his hole.
Matt Kuchar loses out on FedEx Cup playoffs, Max Greyserman makes the field after 2nd place finish at the Wyndham Championship
Greyserman opted out of the Monday finish for the Wyndham Championship and instead, decided to finish off his hole despite speaking to Matt Kuchar. Max Greyserman went on to par the hole but still finished in second place due to a disastrous quadruple bogey on the 14th hole.
It was ultimately Aaron Rai who picked up his first PGA Tour win with a score of -18. Matt Kuchar will finish the tournament on Monday, despite having started off on the 18th hole on Sunday night. He has already hit his ball off the tee box, and will continue from the greens to make it to the hole.
After opting to finish his play on Monday, Matt Kuchar is currently in T12. With this finish, he has lost out on his spot in the FedEx Cup playoffs, breaking his 17-year long streak. Aaron Rai has secured his place in the post season playoffs alongside Max Greyserman.
