The owner build the team its first home stadium named Bennett Park. The Tigers were a part of the Western League from 1894 to 1900. The team became a part of the American League in 1901 and became a part of AL Division in 1969. It was part of the AL East Division until 1997. Then in 1998, the Tigers became a part of the AL Central Division and has been there ever since.
