Attending Lee-Scott Academy, Thompson was a part of the team that won six straight state championships from 2012 to 2017, including a state championship in basketball in 2016. In 2013 and 2015, he also won the individual state championship.

Following his graduation in 2021, Thompson joined the Korn Ferry Tour as a professional. After opening the Rocket Mortgage Classic with a two-stroke lead after round one, he scored a bogey-free 9-under 63 to finish T58 in his sixth PGA Tour start overall and third as a professional.

After finishing the 2022 Korn Ferry Tour season 16th on the points list and finishing four rounds below par, including a victory at the Rex Hospital Open in June 2022, Thompson was awarded a card for the 2022–23 PGA Tour.
