"Shubman Gill doesn't know how to captain the side, he looks clueless"- Amit Mishra

Shubman Gill led the Indian team against Zimbabwe in the recent T20Is

Veteran Indian leg-spinner Amit Mishra made a bold claim about star batter Shubman Gill, stating that the batter doesn't have a captaincy pedigree and is clueless as a leader. Gill led the Indian team in the recently concluded T20I series against Zimbabwe, winning 4-1.

Mishra felt that Gill's captaincy in IPL 2024 was enough for him to suggest that the youngster cannot make good decisions under pressure situations. Gill led the Gujarat Titans (GT) in IPL 2024, finishing eighth with just five wins from 14 matches.

On Shubhankar Mishra's podcast, Amit Mishra said about Shubman Gill:

"Mai Shubman ko captain nahi banaunga, kyonki maine usey IPL me dekha, he doesn't know ki captaincy kaise karna hai, uske paas captaincy ka idea hi nahi hai. (I would not have made him the captain. You saw the IPL this season, Gill doesn't know how to captain the side, he is clueless) Just because he is a part of the Indian team, he shouldn't be made the captain."

Mishra acknowledged just how good Shubman Gill had been in the IPL over the past few years as a batter and for the Indian team. However, he feels the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad are better suited as leaders than Gill.

Captaincy brings out the best in me: Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill and company had lost the first T20I against Zimbabwe but made a great comeback winning the remaining four games to take the series 4-1. Gill spoke about how captaincy brought the best out of him as a player and told reporters after the game:

"It (captaincy) is something that I definitely enjoy. I think it brings out the best in me when I am out there because I look to be involved in the game. It is something that really brings out the side of me which I enjoy being on the field."

Gill also accepted that a certain amount of pressure comes with captaincy. However, the satisfaction of getting the job done for the team by withstanding the pressure is also immense according to the star batter.
