WWE Night of Champions 2013 - Impromptu match added, Paul Heyman's new client

Curtis Axel with Paul Heyman

For all those who were complaining about the Intercontinental title not being defended tonight, Triple H came up with a nice plan. He came out and announced a IC title match between Kofi Kingston and Curtis Axel, and said he wasn’t the villainous character that the WWE universe was considering him to be.

The bonus match saw Axel successfully defend his title against Kingston in a decent opening bout of the show. Paul Heyman, who voiced his displeasure about the match backstage, made sure the same happened ringside too as he came up with great facial expressions. Kingston and Axel worked really well during the match, and Axel showed just why he needs to be considered a serious performer. Axel’s strong dropkick to the gut of Kingston was a great spot as he managed to nail the move to perfection.

Post match, Heyman made it clear that he believed in his client, who was to team up with him later on for a match against Punk.

Speaking of the Heyman-Punk rivalry, the only thing standing in the way of Punk and Heyman was Curtis Axel. After beating Kingston earlier in the night, Axel looked strong and made it clear that Punk couldn’t take him lightly. In fact during the handicap elimination match against Punk, it was Axel who dominated most of the match, doling out a lot of punishment on Punk. Brutal shots from kendo sticks and a massive chair shot to the back of the head showed Axel’s aggressive intent in the match.

However, Axel finally gave in as Punk hit him with a GTS and locked in the Anaconda Vice to make him tap out. Finally Punk was clear to go for Heyman, who made a hilarious run for his life around the arena before being caught in the middle of the ring by Punk. Heyman received some strong shots from the kendo stick before being handcuffed by Punk. It looked as though it was the end of Paul Heyman.

But the surprise factor came in as Paul Heyman’s newest probable client Ryback. Though most of us expected someone new to show up, no one thought about Ryback as a probable choice.

The Heyman-Punk saga has now been refuelled to continue with a new monster obstacle in the form of Ryback. The Big Hungry wrestler finally has entered a feud that will give him some sort of relevance as a monster heel in the company.
