What's the story?
In an interview with The Wrap, former WWE Tag Team Champion Big E explained the possibilities of The New Day turning heel again and revealed why it isn't exactly on the cards anytime soon.
In case you didn't know...
The New Day first debuted as babyfaces in late 2014. However, they were a completely different version of what they are today and the crowd did not respond well to them. As a result, they turned heel and remained heels for almost one and a half years, during which they became the Tag Team Champions twice and also started gaining a lot more popularity.
In March 2016, they organically turned babyface in a feud against The League Of Nations. Since then, they've remained babyfaces despite teasing a heel turn several times towards the end of their record-breaking second tag team title run.
Bryan Alvarez on the Wrestling Observer Radio reported around December last year that The New Day was set to turn heel. However, they were working on a book according to him, which is what delayed it further.
The heart of the matter
Big E told The Wrap that he thought that The New Day would be turning heel after they dropped the tag titles to Sheamus & Cesaro last year. The feeling was that they were stale and that was the direction they were headed in, primarily due to the fact that they were getting booed quite a bit.
He continued: "Tempting as it may be in the writers’ room, I really don’t know if being heel is gonna be in the cards anytime soon”
Big E, however, is not opposed to a heel turn sometime down the road.
I feel like we have a lot left to offer in terms of different varieties or different incarnations of The New Day. You never know in 6 months how people are gonna feel
What's next?
The New Day have been an integral part of the elevation of SmackDown Live's tag team division this year and have played an important role of lead babyfaces. However, with The Usos now being popular and respected faces, could an opportunity arise sometime down the road?
Author's take
The New Day right now are correctly positioned as top babyfaces on SmackDown Live. They still sell great merchandise, they get great reactions and since their formation in 2014, there has never been a better year for them in terms of match quality.
If The Usos start picking up more popularity and becoming hotter and The New Day somehow start to get stale again, perhaps WWE can pull the trigger, but only when the time is right.
