Florida Panthers legend reflects on Stanley Cup win

A key figure for the Florida Panthers, Scott Mellanby, praised the Panthers for their resilience in winning the Stanley Cup.

“I think their win is tremendous,” Mellanby said (via NHL.com). “It’s been a long journey. I’m happy that the franchise survived. They went through a lot of tough years to become champions.”

Mellanby fondly remembers the Panthers' early days.

“Florida was probably the most special place for me both professionally and personally,” Mellanby added. “I’d just got married the summer I was picked up in the draft. My kids were born in Florida. We had a really great group of people there and I have great memories.”

Mellanby scored his first goal in 1993. He later became captain and played 552 games and scored 364 goals.

Mellanby helped build hockey culture in South Florida. He's famous for the "rat trick" incident that started a unique fan tradition. Now, he advises the St. Louis Blues.
