Leon Draisaitl, who recently signed an eight-year, $112 million contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers, talked about the team's plans for the 2024/25 NHL season. Speaking with the media on Saturday, he stressed the importance of playing in real games to build chemistry with new linemates. Draisaitl said practice is helpful, but game situations are where true chemistry forms.

Regarding the Oilers' slow starts in past seasons, Draisaitl acknowledged the team's determination to avoid repeating that this year. However, he said last year’s struggles shouldn't affect their approach to training camp. He noted that it's important to give younger players a chance early in camp but also said veterans need time to find their rhythm.

"...It'll take time to figure out what kind of team we are, but I think we’ll be a similar team with different characters and players. Sometimes it takes time to get used to that," Draisaitl said.

Draisaitl prefers to play three to four preseason games to get into a groove before the season starts.

"I mean, three to four is probably a good amount. At the end of the day, it's up to the coaching staff, but yeah, three to four would be a good number," he added.

He also shared that every team wants to start strong, but it’s more important to build chemistry and form an identity.

"Not necessarily, I don't think. You always try and get off to a good start. Every team does. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Last year, it didn’t, but like I said, we're definitely looking forward to getting into some games and, more importantly, getting the rhythm going a bit," he added.

Leon Draisaitl is confident but knows the team will need time to find its strengths with the new players.

Leon Draisaitl also discusses Oilers replacing speed, Cody Ceci's departure, and offseason recovery

Leon Draisaitl reflected on losing key players, saying the team will replace speed with smart puck movement. He mentioned that players like Foegele and Holloway were some of the team's fastest forwards last season.

Draisaitl also praised former teammate Cody Ceci for his steady play, especially in defense and penalty killing. He believes that while Ceci will be missed, his departure gives others a chance to step up.

"His character. Quiet guy. Fantastic human being...We’re, of course, going to miss him, but obviously it creates opportunity for other guys," Draisaitl said.

Leon Draisaitl said the shorter offseason hasn't affected him much, allowing him enough time to rest and recharge. Now, he's eager to get back on the ice.
