Wayne Gretzky's wife, Janet, reshared an old motivational clip of "The Great One" to honor her mother-in-law, Phyllis, on what would have been her birthday.
In the video, Gretzky reflected on his journey:
“Mother ask me all the time, how many hours a day did you practice? Tell my son, I'm like, I didn't practice. That's what I loved. If you love something in life, whether it's, you know, business or being a doctor or being an athlete, if you have a passion for it, my goodness, the hours or analysis that you put in."
Janet Gretzky reshared the video on Instagram, wishing birthday to her mother-in-law, with the caption:
"Happy Heavenly Birthday Phylis ❤."
"The Great One" also posted a heartfelt message on Instagram, wishing his mom a heavenly birthday, accompanied by a touching photo.
Phyllis Gretzky, who died on Dec. 19, 2005, at the age of 64, was diagnosed with lung cancer in late 2004. She died just two nights after "The Great One" had taken an indefinite leave of absence from his coaching position with the Coyotes to be with her in Ontario.

Alex Ovechkin is not focused on Wayne Gretzky's record
Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin is in his 20th season in the NHL. He has tallied 853 goals and is close to breaking Gretzky's record of 894 goals.
However, despite having a real shot of breaking Gretzky's record this season, Ovechkin is not focused on it; instead, he's concentrating on winning another Stanley Cup. Ovi said (via Capitals beat reporter Sammi Silber's post on X).
“The most important thing is to win another Cup."
Ovechkin has won the coveted Cup after beating the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final in 2018. Ovi led the postseason with 15 goals and was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP.
Ovechkin is just 42 short of becoming the NHL's all-time leader in goals. This season, the 39-year-old Russian has padded one assist.
