Edmonton Oilers star Leon Draisaitl announced his engagement this week, with the announcement coming ahead of teammate Connor McDavid's wedding this summer. After proposing, Draisaitl took to Instagram to share a photo of him and his bride-to-be in Mallorca. However, what caught the attention of NHL fans was the comments section.

Along with the slew of fans, many of the forward's peers and former teammates were quick to offer their congratulations.

LA Kings vet Anze Kopitar and Draisaitl's former Oilers teammate Zack Kassian congratulated him on his engagement.

At the same time, former NHL player Morgan Ellis, who spent time in the NHL and AHL, congratulated him, referencing the extension many fans are expecting Draisaitl to sign before the start of training camp. Last but certainly not least, Hall of Famer Chris Pronger also congratulated the couple.

The comments and the fact that Draisaitl liked each one caught the attention of fans.

The screenshot of the comment section was shared on X (formerly Twitter), and NHL fans were quick to react.

"Wait, extension? Did I miss a memo?" one wrote.
"Draisaitl to LA confirmed based on this post," another fan added.
"Leon "liked" the extention comment. Let's Goooo !!" one fan wrote.

Others weren't as interested in the comments.

"Yes saying congratulations is sooooo interesting," one fan wrote.
"Not sure what you find interesting. These are people he's met throughout his career. Why wouldn't they congratulate him?" another added.
"Engagement farming at its finest. Except actually at its worst because no one is commenting. Well, except me. Dammit," another wrote.

As one fan pointed out, Leon Draisaitl will have to sign an extension regardless of where he goes, making the comment from Ellis not as interesting as others made it out to be.

"I mean he needs an extension no matter what or who it’s with …" a fan added

Looking at the latest regarding Leon Draisaitl's contract extension talk

In the wake of the Stanley Cup Final, there has been little news regarding a potential contract extension for Leon Draisaitl.

While one NHL insider has theorized that he and Connor McDavid haven't yet had a chance to discuss their futures and impending extensions because of McDavid's wedding, Draisaitl's agent, Jiri Poner, has put the Oilers on the clock.

Given his production in recent years and the strong push he and the Oilers made in the Stanley Cup Playoffs last year, Poner is eager for the star forward to receive a big extension.

After playing on a team-friendly contract, he wants to see his client paid soon. Speaking in an interview with Eishockey News in Germany, Poner revealed that he wants an extension finalized before the start of training camp.

“There's no rush yet, but either it happens quickly, i.e., by the end of August, or it doesn't work out at all," Poner said. "It will also become clear whether Edmonton really wants him or not. ... Very confident that there will be an agreement with Edmonton in the end.”

Of course, with Draisaitl getting engaged, the Oilers star will likely take some time to enjoy himself before negotiations on an extension pick up steam. With training camp set to start in September, it will be interesting to see how offseason negotiations progress for Draisaitl and the Oilers.
