"Senseless tragedy": Wayne Gretzky pens down a strong message following Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew’s tragic death

NHL legend Wayne Gretzky is deeply saddened by the tragic deaths of Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew. The Gaudreau brothers died in a biking accident on August 29 in Oldmans Township, New Jersey.

A suspected drunk driver allegedly hit them while trying to pass another car. Johnny was 31, and Matthew was 29. They were in town to be groomsmen at their sister's wedding.

"Janet, myself, and our entire family are devastated at this senseless tragedy. We are sending our love, thoughts, and prayers to the Gaudreau family. We lost two great young men who were loved and a huge presence both on and off the ice. Johnny and Matthew, you will always be remembered and missed," Gretzky tweeted.

Johnny Gaudreau, known as "Johnny Hockey," was a star NHL player. He was a finalist for the Calder Memorial Trophy and won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy in 2017. He played for the Calgary Flames before signing with the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2022. Johnny leaves behind his wife, Meredith, and two children, a daughter and a son.

Matthew Gaudreau also played hockey and coached at Gloucester Catholic High School in New Jersey. He is survived by his wife, Madeline. She is expecting.

The Gaudreau brothers’ deaths have deeply affected the hockey community. Gretzky’s message reflects the sorrow shared by many.

Calgary Flames and Gary Bettman mourned Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew's death

The Calgary Flames shared their deep sadness over the deaths of Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau. Johnny played for the Flames for nine seasons. The team remembered him as a great player and a beloved member of the community.

"Our hearts are broken by this devastating loss. Johnny was and always will be a member of the Flames family and loved by all of Calgary. It was our privilege to call Johnny our teammate for nine amazing years in Calgary.
"He came to Calgary as a young man and grew up here, not only as a superstar on the ice, but also a beloved member of our community." The statement from Flames read (via NHL.com).

They offered their deepest sympathies to Johnny’s wife, Meredith, their children, and the entire Gaudreau family.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman described Johnny Gaudreau as a talented player with a great spirit. He noted that Johnny’s love for hockey was clear both on and off the ice. The NHL praised Johnny’s commitment as a father and teammate and extended condolences to the Gaudreau family.
