As the 2024–25 NHL season approaches, Washington Capitals fans are hopeful about their team’s playoff chances. Last season, the Capitals made the playoffs with a 40-31-11 record, finishing fourth in the Metropolitan Division. However, they were knocked out early, losing 4-0 to the New York Rangers in the first round.

This year, fans are optimistic due to key roster upgrades. The projected lineup includes veterans like Alex Ovechkin, Dylan Strome, and Tom Wilson on the top line. New additions, such as Pierre-Luc Dubois and Jakob Chychrun, bring added depth to the team.

The Capitals' projected lineup for the upcoming season (via NHL):

Forwards

  • Alex Ovechkin, Dylan Strome and Tom Wilson
  • Connor McMichael, Pierre-Luc Dubois and T.J. Oshie
  • Sonny Milano, Hendrix Lapierre and Andrew Mangiapane
  • Aliaksei Protas, Nic Dowd and Brandon Duhaime

On defense:

  • Jakob Chychrun — John Carlson
  • Rasmus Sandin, Matt Roy
  • Martin Fehervary, Trevor van Riemsdyk

In goal:

  • Charlie Lindgren
  • Logan Thompson

On social media, NHL fans are discussing the Caps' chances. And it is because of the NHL's question,

"Will the @Capitals make another trip to the #StanleyCup Playoffs in 2024-25 with this projected lineup?"

Soon, NHL fans started sharing their opinions on X:

"Most slept on team in the league. 3rd in the Metro." One fan commented,
"I mean it is better than last years by miles" another fan said.
"Oshie wont play and if he does I don’t know if we have the cap space for that lineup" a fan opined.

Here are some more reactions from fans on X:

"Complete implosion is more likely than making the playoffs again. I don’t think either happens, but going 20-2-11 in one-goal games is some 2022 Minnesota Vikings kind of unsustainable. Dropping 10 points is not unreasonable" a fan said.
"Defense is good, everything else is meh" a fan said.
"4th best team in the metro. Could get a wild card spot" one fan wrote.

New acquisitions by the Washington Capitals to boost their playoff chances

The Washington Capitals have made several key additions for the 2024–25 season. They acquired forward Pierre-Luc Dubois from the Los Angeles Kings, who had 40 points last season. Defenseman Jakob Chychrun was traded from the Ottawa Senators and may join John Carlson on the top pair.

Matt Roy signed a six-year, $34.5 million deal; he had 25 points and led the Kings in short-handed ice time (2:51). Goalie Logan Thompson was obtained from the Vegas Golden Knights, showing a solid performance with a 2.70 GAA.

Forward Andrew Mangiapane, from the Calgary Flames, added 40 points last season. Brandon Duhaime, who signed a two-year, $3.7 million contract, is expected to play on the fourth line.
