Connor Bedard entered Chicago Blackhawks training camp this year feeling much more at ease. Unlike last season when he was the number one overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft and dealt with immense pressure and hype, this time Bedard was coming off a summer of peace.

While talking to the media during the second day of training camp on Friday, the 19-year-old center said per NHL.com:

“I didn’t have an interview for a couple of months, which was unbelievable. I feel a lot more ready to come [here]. The excitement was there last year, but I think I just feel more relaxed.”

Despite the frenzy surrounding the teenage superstar, Bedard put together an outstanding rookie season. He recorded 61 points including 22 goals and 39 assists over 68 games. The rookie phenom won the Calder Trophy in June.

While Bedard's individual performance was highly rewarding, from a team perspective last season was disappointing. The Blackhawks stumbled to a 23-53-6 record, finishing last in the Central Division.

"It was really frustrating for us to lose so many games last year. That was difficult for me and provided big motivation going into the summer," Bedard told reporters last month.

So, the phenom went home to North Vancouver, British Columbia and dedicated himself to improving his speed and conditioning.

"Our skating group back home is so competitive. We're constantly doing small games and simulations which I think really benefits you for camp and games," Bedard explained.

With a renewed focus and a more relaxed mindset, Connor Bedard is looking forward to the next season.

Taylor Hall talks about Connor Bedard and shares his first NHL year experience

Chicago Blackhawks forward Taylor Hall commented on teammate Connor Bedard's first NHL season and what he has observed from the young phenom in training camp this year.

Hall noted that Bedard seems more relaxed and comfortable now that he has a year under his belt.

"To me, it seems that maybe there’s a bit of a weight off his shoulders, that he’s had that rookie year… and it was a really good one for him," Hall said. "I know I felt that after my first year. It was like, 'OK, I can take a breath and I know what it’s like now.'"

Hall went on to say that Bedard now knows what to expect with training camp, the coaches, his living situation, and the demands that will be placed on him.
