"Absolute best big brothers": Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau's sister pays heartfelt tribute to her brothers

Katie Gaudreau shared pictures with her late brothers Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau and her family on Instagram. She was speechless upon learning the news of their deaths.

In the pictures, Katie can be seen celebrating Christmas with her brother and nephew. She and her brothers got pictures clicked with their family dog.

"To know these two was to love these two," Katie wrote in the caption. "There are absolutely no words I have to express the bond my family shared. The entire world knows there would never have been a John without Matty or Matty without John.
"The absolute best big brothers a little girl could have asked for. This will never be a goodbye post because I will never stop saying your names and honoring you both. I’ll take the best care of mom, dad, Kristen, Mer, Madeline, and your babies."

Katie also vowed to take care of their family.

Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew died in a biking accident on August 29, 2024, in New Jersey. They were in town for their sister’s wedding when a suspected drunk driver hit them. The driver has been charged, and the investigation is ongoing.

Johnny Gaudreau was a well-known NHL player, starting with the Calgary Flames before joining the Blue Jackets in 2022. Matthew also played in the ECHL and AHL before coaching at their former high school.

Their deaths shocked the hockey community, with tributes pouring in from teams, the NHL Commissioner, and the NHL Players' Association.

"Last night we lost two husbands, two fathers, two sons, two brothers, two sons and brothers-in-law, two nephews, two cousins, two family members, two teammates, two friends but truly two amazing humans." Uncle Jim Gaudreau wrote.
"We want to let everyone know we are receiving your messages of love and support and we appreciate your continued thoughts and prayers. We ask for your continued respect and privacy during this very difficult period of grief."

The Gaudreau family, including Johnny Gaudreau’s wife and children and Matthew’s wife, are coping with the losses. The brothers are remembered for their close bond and the joy they brought to their family and the sport.
