For now, Connor McDavid is an Edmonton Oiler. That may not always be the case, especially since his current contract ends two years from now. The star forward will still just be 30 when he enters unrestricted free agency, meaning he won't be reaching retirement age and may not even be on the decline when any team can sign him.

The fact that McDavid was spotted with Auston Matthews recently in a restaurant sparked conversation over the Oilers star's next potential team. Whether or not it's the Toronto Maple Leafs remains to be seen.

NHL fans speculated what might be in the works after seeing two of the best players in the sport dine together.

"I think they’re talking about winning the cup. Auston is saying he’s coming to Edmonton in 4 years to be 3C behind McDavid and Draisaitl," another said.
"I know we as Leafs fans like to joke about this. But I'm honestly a little afraid that when it happens, I won't get to enjoy it because of the heart attack I'll have from pure excitement," one added.
"Matthews would score 90 if he had McDavid," one said.
"Can you imagine if McDavid came to Toronto?!? Remember the day that the Tavares news dropped? Yeah, that times 100," another added.

While there is currently no indication that McDavid is going to leave the Edmonton Oilers or join the Toronto Maple Leafs, that didn't stop NHL fans from speculating where he could end up in the future.

What is Connor McDavid's contract?

Right now, Connor McDavid isn't going anywhere. The NHL star is still in the midst of a huge extension he signed with the Edmonton Oilers. He's still under contract through the 2025-2026 season. He will likely be courted for an extension either during or after this season.

He could be traded, but that's unlikely. He brought Edmonton within a goal of a historic comeback in the Stanley Cup Final last season, so the Oilers aren't likely to trade him. If and when he does become a free agent, things may change. Until then, he's locked in and likely isn't going to join Auston Matthews in Toronto.
