With Patrik Laine’s reported trade request from the Columbus Blue Jackets, a number of questions have emerged. Specifically, questions about potential landing spots for Laine have dominated the rumor mill.

Considering he has a modified no-trade clause, he holds some control over where he could go next. Laine has been clear about his desire to get a fresh start, as such, a solid team with a strong track record could provide Laine with the opportunity he needs to excel.

Here are three potential landing spots that Patrik Laine should refuse to go to.

3 teams Patrik Laine should not accept a trade to

#1: Buffalo Sabres

The Buffalo Sabres seemed poised to emerge from their rebuild. While most analysts picked the Sabres to contend for a playoff spot, the club’s disappointing performance has fueled speculation about potential additions.

Patrik Laine could be a great addition to the Sabres. He could slot into the top line or play on the second unit to alleviate some pressure from high expectations.

However, the Sabres might not be the best fit for Laine, as expectations would be as high as they were in Columbus. As such, having the spotlight on him could lead to similar issues as those Laine faced in Winnipeg or Columbus.

Furthermore, there is no guarantee the Sabres will contend for a playoff spot next year. Thus, joining the Sabres could lead to frustrations similar to those in Columbus.

#2: Chicago Blackhawks

The Blackhawks have cap space and the need for a top-line forward. The prospect of Connor Bedard and Patrik Laine on the same line could entice Chicago fans to dream of what could be. Unfortunately, Chicago is still deep in its rebuild.

So, how would Laine fit in Chicago?

Chances are the expectations would be low, considering that Chicago is not expected to contend. But that’s precisely the point. If the Hawks are not ready to contend, Laine could face another long season in Chicago.

#3: San Jose Sharks

The Sharks need scoring. The Sharks have cap space. The Sharks will get Macklin Celebrini. Despite those apparent advantages, San Jose is possibly the worst option for Patrick Laine. The Finn needs a team with structure and a system that could allow him to play to his strengths.

San Jose is not there just yet. In fact, they are perhaps a couple of seasons away before the club’s coaching change bears fruit. In short, Patrik Laine should arguably avoid teams where he could be the center of attention.

A third-line role on a contending team like the Carolina Hurricanes or New York Rangers could be much more beneficial than joining a rebuilding team like the Sharks.
