Leon Draisaitl is set to enter the final year of his contract with the Edmonton Oilers. If Draisaitl hits free agency on July 1, 2025, he would be one of the most anticipated free agents available in years.

Draisaitl is one of the top players in the NHL and the German has said he wants to remain in Edmonton. But, currently, no deal has been reached, and here are three reasons why he shouldn't re-sign with the Oilers.

3 reasons why Leon Draisaitl shouldn't sign an extension with the Oilers

#1. Be the top player on another team

Leon Draisaitl is one of the best players in the world, but he isn't the best player on the Edmonton Oilers, due to the team having Connor McDavid.

If Draisaitl wants to be the No. 1 option on a team, he would have to leave Edmonton. The German could go to another team that needs a true No. 1 player and be the face of the franchise for another team, which he isn't in Edmonton.

#2. Higher payday

If Leon Draisaitl wants to get the most amount of money possible, leaving the Edmonton Oilers will likely have to happen.

The Oilers are right near the salary cap, and McDavid also needs a contract extension two years from now. So, if Edmonton is going to keep both Draisitl and McDavid, both will likely need to take a bit of a discount.

However, if Draisaitl is after the money, the German forward will likely get paid a lot more by another team that desperately needs a star player.

#3. If Edmonton wins the Cup this year

The final reason is if the Edmonton Oilers win the Stanley Cup this season, Leon Draisaitl would have nothing else to prove.

If Edmonton falls short this year, there could be a part of Draisaitl's ego that wants to win the Cup with this group and the Oilers. But, if Edmonton wins, there is nothing left for Draisaitl to prove, which is why he likely would leave.
