The Boston Bruins lost 2-1 in OT to the Utah Hockey Club on Saturday at Delta Center. Utah played a strong game, coming back from a 1-0 deficit in the third period to score two goals and take the two points.

Cole Koepke scored his third of the season for the Bruins at 12:40 of the season. Vladislav Kolyachonok tied the game at 14:51 of the third. Then, Michael Kesselring buried the game-winning at 2:46 of OT.

Here's a closer look at three reasons why the Boston Bruins lost 2-1 in OT to the Utah Hockey Club on Saturday.

3 reasons why Boston Bruins lost 2-1 in OT to Utah Hockey Club

#3. The scoring wasn’t there

In their last outing, the Bruins scored five goals against the Colorado Avalanche. The 5-3 win looked good on paper and on ice. However, the offense dried up on Saturday against Utah.

In particular, Boston’s top players couldn’t muster much against Utah's defense. Elias Lindholm, Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak all had quiet games. Furthermore, the Utah Hockey Club deserves credit for keeping the Bruins’ big guns in check.

#2. The Bruins ran out of gas

Boston played a solid 40 minutes, keeping Utah's attack at bay. However, it seemed like the Bruins ran out of gas, unable to keep up with the Hockey Club in the third period. The Bruins looked slow and at times were outplayed by their younger and faster opponents.

In OT, the Bruins were gassed by the end of a 4-on-3 power play. As Utah kept mounting the pressure, the Bruins didn’t seem to have much left in the tank. In the end, they broke down just as the penalty expired, allowing Kesselring enough time and space to place a rocket in the top corner past Jeremy Swayman.

#1. The Bruins took a penalty at the worst possible time

David Pastrnak was on the short end of the stick, taking a penalty early in the OT period. He inadvertently tripped up Utah captain Clayton Keller, giving the Hockey Club a 4-on-3 power play.

When looking at the play itself, the Bruins had killed off the penalty. However, the winning goal happened just as the penalty had expired, but before Pastrnak could come out of the penalty box and get back into the play.

In the end, Utah won a hard-fought game in which Boston didn’t bring its A-game. The Bruins finish up their three-game road trip on Tuesday against the Nashville Predators at Bridgestone Arena while the Hockey Club hosts the Ottawa Senators the same day.
