Carlos Alcaraz and Coco Gauff had a disappointing outing at the 2024 US Open. The Spaniard was stunned by Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round.

Speaking about his shock loss, Alcaraz said he could not increase his level enough to win the match.

"I don't know what to say right now. I couldn't increase my level. I think my level stayed at the same point all the match, and it wasn't enough to win the match or to give myself the chance to getting into the match or trying to give myself chances," he told the media.
"I didn't feel well hitting the ball. I think I made a lot of mistakes. When I wanted to come back or I think I wanted to come back, it was too late," he added.

Gauff, on the other hand, failed to defend her title as she suffered a fourth-round exit against compatriot Emma Navarro. Talking to the press, the 20-year-old said she gave her hundred percent emotionally and mentally but could not execute her plan well enough.

"I mean, mentally I gave it and emotionally I gave it my all. Of course, there were things execution-wise, where I was like, obviously I wish I could serve better. I think if I would have did that, it would have been a different story for me in the match," Gauff said.

China Open is an ATP 500 event, while stakes are higher in the WTA as the tournament is of 1000 level. Gauff will begin her campaign against Clara Burel on September 27, while Alcaraz will face Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard on the same day.
