Indian tennis ace Rohan Bopanna and Aldila Sutjiadi’s stellar run at the US Open 2024 ended on Tuesday, September 3, as they lost in the mixed doubles semifinals. The eighth-seeded duo succumbed to the American pair of Donald Young and Taylor Townsend 3-6, 4-6.

Bopanna and Sutjiadi showed spirited performances throughout their US Open campaign, particularly in the quarterfinal against fourth seeds Matthew Ebden and Barbora Krejcikova.

The Indo-Indonesian pair secured a 7-6(4), 2-6, 10-7 victory in a nail-biting encounter that lasted one hour and 33 minutes. However, the momentum from that hard-fought win wasn’t enough to carry them through to the final.

Rohan Bopanna and Aldila Sutjiadi fought hard to claw their way back but the Americans were relentless. Townsend and Young took the first set 6-3 and never allowed the Indo-Indonesian pair to find their rhythm.

In the second set, Bopanna and Sutjiadi managed to stay even for a few games but a crucial break by the Americans tipped the balance in their favor once again.

Rohan Bopanna, known for his powerful serves, delivered several big ones, but Townsend and Young’s consistent returns often neutralized his efforts. Sutjiadi, usually sharp at the net, struggled to make an impact, especially during the critical points.

The eighth seeds had four break-point opportunities in the match but could only convert one, while Townsend and Young made the most of their chances, converting three out of five. Despite their best efforts, Bopanna and Sutjiadi couldn't overcome the American pair’s solid defense, and the second set ended 6-4 in favor of Townsend and Young.

As far as returning is concerned, Townsend and Young shone, converting three of their five break points, whereas Bopanna and Sutjiadi could convert only one of their four opportunities.

The Americans also had the upper hand in winners, hitting 26, compared to just 10 from Bopanna and Sutjiadi. Both teams were nearly even in unforced errors, with the Americans committing 14 and the Indo-Indonesian pair 13. However, it was Townsend and Young's ability to capitalize on the crucial points that made the difference.

Ultimately, the home favorites winning 72 percent of their service points and 47 percent of their return points was the key to their victory, securing their spot in the final and ending Bopanna and Sutjiadi’s spirited run at this year’s New York Major.
