Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Coco Gauff, Sloane Stephens, and Althea Gibson were all represented by a fan at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The fan has since then gone viral for donning the T-shirt honoring the aforementioned Americans.

Venus and Serena, the Williams sisters, are widely regarded as two of the greatest players of all time having won 23 and seven slams respectively. The sisters have since gone on to become icons not only in the world of tennis but also in their nation for revolutionizing the sport.

They have not only dominated the tour in singles but also in doubles. While Venus has completed the career Golden Slam in doubles, Serena has completed it in singles as well as doubles.

Among other notable black players, Coco Gauff burst on the scene by taking out Venus on the center court in the first round of Wimbledon in 2019. However, she reached the upper echelons of tennis during the North American hard-court swing last year when she captured titles in Washington and Cincinnati before conquering Flushing Meadows.

Sloane Stephens became a part of this elite list in 2017 when she won her home slam US Open. Althea Gibson, meanwhile, became the first black woman to win a Grand Slam when she won the French Open in 1956. She then won back-to-back Wimbledon titles and US Opens in 1957 and 1958.

A fan at the 2024 Paris Olympics was seen donning a white t-shirt with the names of the aforementioned players on the back. A user on X (formerly Twitter) posted and it has since gone viral with the photo garnering over 73,000 views.

During a conversation with Harper's Bazaar, Serena Williams talked about the difficulties faced by black women in today's world and stated how they have to begin from the bottom and win more than their peers to prove themselves. She also mentioned that they get paid less and aren't given the same number of opportunities as the others.

“It’s hard because when you are a person of color, you’re expected to—you have to—win so many times more than someone else. To be honest, as a Black woman, we are basically starting at the bottom. You don’t get paid as much. You don’t get as many opportunities,” Serena Williams said.

Serena Williams also explained the importance of breaking down those barriers that stopped black people from embracing themselves.
