Serena Williams watching Jannik Sinner's match against Christopher O'Connell over her friend Caroline Wozniacki's against Jessika Ponchet at the 2024 US Open has irked fans. They felt the American legend only attends men's tennis and never shows support for women's tennis.

Williams retired from the sport in 2022 at the US Open. Since then, she has gone on to focus on her other ventures, however, the American still attends matches from time to time. She was recently seen attending top seed Sinner's match against O'Connell, which was won by the Italian.

Wozniacki, who has been impressive at the US Open so far, took out Jessika Ponchet 6-3, 6-2 to reach the fourth round. During the post-match interview, the Dane jokingly called out Williams. She said that she was 'mad' as she saw the American attend Tommy Paul's match but not hers and said that they needed to have a talk about it. The two women share a great friendship

Fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their disappointment at Serena Williams as they felt that the American never attended women's matches. One fan pointed out how it was nasty at Williams' part to not support her friend.

"Wait this is actually so nasty 😭😭😭 serena was there watching jannik too but she can’t pull up for her bestie," the fan said.

Another fan felt that Williams' behavior exemplified the lack of women empowerment in today's world.

"Sadly, this demonstrates the lack of #WomenEmpowerment Women in business experience this daily… #sadbuttrue 😤 Let’s do better 🙏," the fan commented.

Here are some other reactions from the fans.

"Does she EVER watch women's tennis (other than Venus)? 😡," a fan questioned.
"Literally what I asked myself if she ever watches Coco’s matches/ WTA," a fan pondered.
"I love Serena but I’m not sure why she always chooses to attend men’s matches, wouldn’t it make some sense to support women’s tennis ?" a fan asked.
"Exactly the lack of women empowerment happening.. 🙄 Go Caroline 👏🏻👏🏻," a fan said.

A tennis journalist posted Caroline Wozniacki's 'I'm pretty mad at Serena for not showing up for my match.' comments on X. However, the Dane reposted it and made it clear that she was making a joke and wasn't seriously angry at Serena Williams.

"I was clearly joking !" Wozniacki said.

Wozniacki will continue her US Open run against 22nd Beatriz Haddad Maia, in what will be the first meeting between the two. The Brazilian ousted 15th seed Anna Kalinskaya 6-3, 6-1 to reach the final 16.

The winner of their match will play fifth seed Jasmine Paolini or Karolina Muchova in the quarterfinals.
