John McEnroe married American actress Tatum O'Neal, the daughter of actor Ryan O'Neal, in 1986. The couple welcomed three children, Kevin, Sean, and Emily. However, the pair broke up eight years into their marriage in 1994.

In an interview in 1995, O'Neal told Entertainment Weekly that she had started feeling 'insignificant' as a tennis player's wife.

"I missed being a significant aspect of society, because I guess I felt insignificant in my role as a tennis wife," O'Neal said.
"I’ve had a lot of experience with men who are bullies. Taking on John McEnroe was the biggest struggle of my life," she added.

They were awarded joint custody of their children after the divorce but O'Neal's drug problem had resurfaced and that led to McEnroe receiving sole custody in 1998.

In 2022, after the release of his biopic, McEnroe sat down for an interview with Sunrise. He opened up about his 'difficult divorce'.

"I think there's other things, such as being a parent, for example, that a lot of people can relate to and sort of the struggles of even being married. I went through a difficult divorce and then able to come out the other side and get a second chance. I think a lot of people relate to that also," he said.

McEnroe married rock singer Patty Smyth in 1997. The seven-time singles Grand Slam champion has two daughters with her, Ava and Anna.
