The North American spring swing gets underway with the BNP Paribas Open, which is scheduled to be held in Indian Wells, California from March 8 to 19. The near two-week event will see men's and women's competitions being staged simultaneously.

The upcoming tournament will be the 49th edition of the men's event and 34th for the women's. While the men's event is classified as an ATP Masters 1000 competition, the women's event has WTA 1000 billing.

The BNP Paribas Open has had no dearth of top stars over the years. At the 2023 edition, all eyes will be on former US Open winner Daniil Medvedev, who has caught fire in the February tournaments.

Fresh off wins at Rotterdam and Doha, the former World No. 1 is now in Dubai, gunning for a third conseuctive title. Notably, the Russian beat Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic in the semifinals of the event.

As for Djokovic, his participation in Indian Wells remains doubtful. The Serb is currently awaiting a decision from the US government on his appeal for exemption from the vaccination requirement.

Three-time winner and last year's runner-up Rafael Nadal will be a significant absentee, as he continues to recover from a left leg injury. Former World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, who won the Argentina Open on his comeback, is racing against time to get fit for Indian Wells.

Last year's champion Taylor Fritz, who already has the Delray Beach Open trophy in his kitty this season, will be aiming for a successful defense of his title.

On the women's side, all competitors will be looking to dethrone 2022 champion Iga Swiatek, who emerged victorious in Doha a couple of weeks ago.

Aryna Sabalenka's winning streak was snapped in Dubai, and it remains to be seen if the Australian Open champion can bounce back in time. Newly crowned Dubai champion Barbora Krejcikova, meanwhile, will hope to continue her giant-killing run at Indian Wells.
