Coco Gauff recently thanked her mother Candi for letting her win at Uno. The former World No. 2 also expressed gratitude to the rest of her team following her dominant 6-1, 6-3 win over Karolina Muchova in the final of the 2024 China Open.

Gauff and Muchova squared off for the prestigious WTA 1000 title in Beijing on Sunday, October 6. While the American was the favorite on paper owing to her significantly higher ranking, the Czech was in red-hot form coming into the final, having eliminated two top 10 players in Aryna Sabalenka (quarterfinals) and Zheng Qinwen (semifinals).

However, it was mostly one-way traffic as Coco Gauff fired six aces, won 85% of her first service and converted five out of nine break point opportunities she engineered throughout the contest. After wrapping up the match in only an hour and 17 minutes, the World No. 6 took to the stage to deliver the winner's speech.

The 2023 US Open champion thanked team members Matt Daly, Felipe Ramirez Luna and Maria Vargo. Daly recently joined Gauff's team as her coach following her split with Brad Gilbert.

"Thank you Matt. This is our first tournament together and obviously it's going well so thank you for helping me throughout this week and thank you to Felipe for letting me win at soccer tennis every day and thanks to Maria for losing at soccer tennis every day," Coco Gauff said.

Gauff went on to thank mother Candi as well, revealing that they had been playing Uno together. The former World No. 2 also gave a shout out to her father Corey.

"And thank you to my mom. She's here. She's been playing Uno, letting me win at Uno and my dad too," Gauff added.

The 2024 China Open title marks Gauff's eighth WTA Tour-level singles title but only her second title this year.

Coco Gauff started the 2024 season with a bang, winning the ASB Classic in Auckland right at the beginning of the year. However, she failed to keep the early-season momentum going, as she struggled with her form and consistency.

By winning the 2024 China Open, she has snapped her almost nine-month title drought. It also marks her second WTA 1000 title; the first came last year at the Cincinnati Open, in the buildup to her title-winning run at the US Open. Coincidentally, Gauff's Cincinnati Open success in 2023 also saw her getting the better of Muchova in the final.

Apart from giving Coco Gauff some much-needed confidence as she heads into another WTA 1000 event in Wuhan, the title triumph also ensures that she returns to the top five in the WTA Tour rankings. Once the new rankings are published on Monday, October 7, Gauff will be the new World No. 4.
