Caroline Wozniacki recently clarified that she was joking about being upset with her longtime friend Serena Williams for choosing to watch Tommy Paul’s third-round match instead of hers at the 2024 US Open. Wozniacki, who secured a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Jessika Ponchet, humorously expressed her anger during her post-match on-court interview, only to later confirm that it was all in good fun.

During her post-match on-court interview, Wozniacki took the opportunity to tease Williams about choosing to watch Paul’s thrilling four-set victory over Gabriel Diallo instead of her match.

"I’m gonna text her. I’m pretty mad at her for not showing up at my match. I saw she was watching Tommy. We have to talk about that a bit later," Wozniacki said.

The lighthearted comment drew laughs from the crowd and quickly made its way across social media. Tennis journalist Jose Morgado shared Wozniacki's quotes from the interview on X (formerly Twitter), to which Wozniacki immediately clarified that she was joking.

"I was clearly joking!" Wozniacki wrote.

The friendship between Wozniacki and Williams is well known in the tennis world. Despite their competitive encounters on the court, the two have maintained a close bond off the court. Their camaraderie dates back over a decade, with Williams even serving as a bridesmaid at Wozniacki’s wedding in 2019.

In terms of their head-to-head record, Williams has dominated their encounters, leading 10-1. The only time Wozniacki triumphed over Williams was during the quarterfinals of the 2012 Miami Open, where she won 6-4, 6-4.

Wozniacki’s performances at the US Open have been impressive, with two runner-up finishes in 2009 and 2014. The 34-year-old made a comeback in 2023 after a brief retirement, reaching the fourth round of that year’s US Open. With her recent victory over Ponchet, the Dane reached the US Open Round of 16 for the eighth time in her career.

"It's hard to be compared to Serena Williams" - Caroline Wozniacki

Caroline Wozniacki stated that former American tennis star Serena Williams has the ability to defeat any of the current Top 10 players in women’s tennis.

During a pre-tournament press conference before the 2024 Australian Open, Wozniacki emphasized that women’s tennis is advancing to new levels, with the current players giving their all.

"I think we have very strong players, players that are performing at a very high level. I think we're pushing tennis in the right direction. I think there's a lot more players that are playing on a very high level. That's been a continuous thing for quite a while now," Caroline Wozniacki stated.

The Danish player later commented that comparing the new generation to the previous one is not a wise approach and reaffirmed that no one can be compared to Serena Williams.

"Again, I think it's hard to compare apples with pears. The old top 10 had the greatest of all time, if not of all tennis, but female and women's tennis. It's hard to be compared to her [Williams]," she added.

Caroline Wozniacki will take on either 22nd seed Beatriz Haddad Maia or 15th seed Anna Kalinskaya in the Round of 16. The winner of this match will face either Karolina Muchova or fifth seed Jasmine Paolini in the quarterfinals.
