Pedro Cachin will take on 12th seed Alexander Zverev on Friday (March 10) in the Indian Wells second round.

World No. 66 Cachin notched up only his second win in ten matches this year when he saw off Nikoloz Basilashvili in his opener. The 27-year-old's only previous win this year came in the Argentina Open first round in Buenos Aires earlier this month.

The win snapped the Argentine's run of four straight opening-round defeats. However, he lost his next two opening-round matches (Rio de Janeiro, Santiago) before beating Basilashvili at Indian Wells earlier this week.

Meanwhile, 14th-ranked Zverev is off to a rather underwhelming 6-7 start to the season. He started the year with successive losses at the inaugural United Cup before reaching the Australian Open second round. Zverev then won one of two Davis Cup matches against Switzerland before reaching the last four at the Dubai Tennis Championships last week, where he lost to Andrey Rublev.

Zverev lost in the opening round at Indian Wells last year but will hope to avoid the same fate this time around.

Pedro Cachin vs Alexander Zverev preview

Zverev reached the Dubai semifinals last week.
Zverev reached the Dubai semifinals last week.

The two players are essentially baseliners, but Zverev is definitely the better of the two because of his big serve and powerful hitting off both flanks.

The 2022 Roland Garros semifinalist moves well for his height and is not hesitant to finish off points at the net. He may not have made a rollicking start to the year but has found form at his last stop at the Dubai Tennis Championships, reaching the last four.

That should stand him in good stead against an opponent who has won just twice this year. Moreover, Zverev has a proven pedigree at the biggest of tournaments, so anything other than a win for the lanky German would be a huge surprise as he seeks his first Indian Wells title.

Prediction: Zverev in straight sets.
