Daniil Medvedev vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina preview

Medvedev is on a roll.

Fifth seed Daniil Medvedev will put his 17-match winning streak on the line when he takes on 23rd seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Wednesday (March 15) for a place in the Indian Wells semifinals.

The red-hot Medvedev - ranked sixth in the world - survived an absolute humdinger against Alexander Zverev in the Round of 16. Down a set and 3-2 against the German, the former World No. 1 rolled his ankle. Nevertheless, he recovered to improve to 22-2 on the season and is into the Indian Wells quarterfinals for the first time in six attempts.

Meanwhile, Davidovich Fokina has quietly impressed in the Californian desert. Having opened his campaign by beating Dallas champion Yibing Wu, the World No. 28 got the better of 13th seed Karen Khachanov and qualifier Cristian Garin to improve to 10-6 on the season.

The 23-year-old is now into his first Masters 1000 quarterfinal on hardcourt, having made the last eight at Monaco in 2021 and the final a year later. However, Davidovich Fokina faces a tall task against Medvedev, who hasn't lost since a third-round exit (to Sebastian Korda) in the Australian Open third round in January.

Daniil Medvedev vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina prediction

Davidovich Fokina
Davidovich Fokina

Both Medvedev and Davidovich Fokina are quintessential baseliners who look to dominate opponents from the backcourt.

However, Medvedev's strong hardcourt game - strong serve and powerful hitting off both flanks - coupled with his elite athleticism gives him a distinct edge. Medvedev's game style is not the most aesthetic, but it has worked mighty well for him against the top players. The 6' 6" Russian moves well for his height and will fancy his chances against Davidovich Fokina, who seems to play his best tennis on claycourts.

Medvedev was clutch on serve in his match against Zverev, especially in the second set where he saved all 10 break points - including twice recovering from 0-40. The former World No. 1 did fail to close out victory at the first time of asking but should have enough in the arsenal to down Fokina.

Prediction: Medvedev in straight sets.
