Both the women’s and men’s tour are making yet another big stop in China, with the Wuhan Open and Shanghai Masters currently underway. The action is heating up nicely with a few big matches unfolding on Monday (October 7).

Wimbledon semifinalist Lorenzo Musetti was among those expected to come through the early stages but he suffered a shock defeat at his opening hurdle.

The Italian, however, was not alone as a handful of other big names also exited the tournament. Here, we have compiled the five biggest shocking results of the day from the Shanghai Masters and Wuhan Open:

#5 Caroline Dolehide

Caroline Dolehide was posting wins over the likes of Danielle Collins just a few weeks ago. The American had ousted her compatriot in the US Open first round.

Her first-round exit at the China Open and now Wuhan then came as a surprise. What was even more shocking was the scoreline that she posted against China’s Wang Xinyu on Monday.

Dolehide was broken on four occasions against Wang and failed to capitalize on any of her four chances to succumb to a 6-4, 6-0 loss.

#4 Jordan Thompson

Moving onto the men’s side of the competition, Jordan Thompson also suffered an early exit at the Shanghai Masters.

The Aussie, who had posted a fourth-round showing at the US Open a month ago, was rather lackluster against Tallon Griekspoor in the first round in Shanghai.

The Dutch player was at his explosive best, thundering down 10 aces against his opponent’s four. The three breaks of serve helped Griekspoor ease past Thompson 6-3, 6-2.

#3 Karen Khachanov

Karen Khachanov ran into Carlos Alcaraz at last week’s China Open, coming up short in the quarterfinals 7-5, 6-2. Much like Thompson, the Russian never really looked comfortable on the court in Shanghai.

Credit is also due for his opponent, Marcos Giron, who never let up his level throughout the encounter.

The American has been playing some good tennis of late, but nothing could have prepared fans for the 6-4, 6-3 scoreline. Khachanov was well placed coming into the tournament after beginning to find his footing in Beijing but his progress has been cut short for now.

#2 Diana Shnaider

Diana Shnaider is another in-form player who made an early exit at the Wuhan Open, failing to convert a one-set lead to go down against Leylah Fernandez.

The Russian, who has already won three titles this season, started well to take the opening set in a tiebreaker 9-7. Her opponent, however, came back strong to take the next two sets.

Fernandez was aggressive on the return and generated a whole host of breakpoints, of which she converted seven. Her seven aces also made up for the 10 double faults that she had hit.

#1 Lorenzo Musetti

Another Shanghai Masters first-round encounter saw two players from completely different generations, Lorenzo Musetti and David Goffin, go head-to-head for three grueling sets.

The Italian was quick out of the blocks, capturing the first set 6-1. A tiebreaker followed in the second that was won by Goffin, who then stepped up to the challenge and took the win 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-2.

Musetti’s run to the Wimbledon semifinal inspired a lot of confidence but he has not been able to capture that same level of success. He did make a final in Chengdu but came up short against Shang Juncheng. The Italian’s fans will now have to wait longer for a big result.
