History

Philadelphia 76ers was founded in 1946 as a part of the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and was named Syracuse Nationals. In 1955, the Syracuse Nationals won their first championship. The franchise struggled in its first few years in the league.

But things changed. The franchise moved to Philadelphia in 1963, where the name was changed to the 76ers. Moving to Philadelphia proved favorable for the franchise, as they won their first NBA championship in 1967. This was the Wilt Chamberlain era, and he led the team to victory.

In 1976, Philadelphia 76ers drafted Julius Erving who became the face of the franchise. Along with Moses Malone, and Hall of Famer Maurice Cheeks, they dominated the regular season. The team won their second NBA championship in 1983.

In 1987, the Sixers drafted Charles Barkley with the first overall pick. The very next year, the team entered the playoffs, but unfortunately lost in the first round. Disappointment continued for the Sixers till Ed Shinder purchased the team in 1996.

The 2000-01 season was the golden period for the franchise again after 1983. Under the guidance of Larry Brown (Head Coach), the team reached the NBA Finals in 2001. But again, they lost the finals against the Los Angeles Lakers.
