Day 9 of the Paris Olympics 2024 brought a mix of triumph and disappointment for the Indian contingent. While the day saw stellar performances, it also gave moments of heartbreak.

Undoubtedly, the standout moment of the day came in hockey. The Indian men’s team produced a remarkable display of grit and resilience in the quarterfinal. Facing Great Britain, the team was reduced to 10 men with 42 minutes left on the clock. Backed up against a wall, the men in blue put on a defensive masterclass, with goalkeeper Sreejesh leading the charge.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw, pushing the game into a penalty shootout. India emerged victorious in a thriller, winning the shootout 4-2 and securing a spot in the semifinals.

In badminton, Lakshya Sen put up an extraordinary fight against reigning Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen. Sen narrowly lost the first game 20-22 and fell 14-21 in the second.

Sen has been exceptional in his debut Olympics and will hope to cap the tournament with a medal in the bronze playoff. He will take on Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia on Monday, August 5.

India's boxing hopes were dashed when Lovlina Borgohain faced a tough bout against China’s Li Qian on Sunday. Borgohain fought valiantly but ended up losing 1-4, ending her country's boxing medal aspirations at the Paris Olympics.

In golf, Gaganjeet Bhullar and Shubhankar Sharma finished their campaigns in 45th and 40th places, respectively.

India’s shooters Anish Bhanwala, Vijayveer Sidhu, Raiza Dhillon, and Maheshwari Chauhan all failed to qualify for the finals of their respective events. India’s 3000m steeplechaser Parul Chaudhary and long jumper Jeswin Aldrin both faced similar fates in athletics.
