PR Sreejesh turns in performance of a lifetime to take Indian hockey team to Paris 2024 Olympics semi-finals

The Indian men’s hockey team have exceeded expectations with their performances at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics. Harmanpreet Singh and Co. defeated Australia in a pool game on Friday, their first win Olympic over the Kookaburras since the Munich 1972 Games.

However, going into the match against world No. 2 Great Britain was a significant challenge. India started the match well, showing defensive astuteness to end the first quarter 0-0. However, the second quarter started in the worst way, with defender Amit Rohidas seeing a direct red card.

India showed grit and determination as captain Harmanpreet Sinh converted a penalty corner to take the lead against the run of play. However, Great Britain equalized within five minutes through Lee Morton.

Veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, appearing in his fourth and final Olympic Games, came to India’s rescue time and again as the Men in Blues stuck to the guns to see out the match with 10 men.

The goalkeeper made 11 big saves to keep India’s hopes of a second Olympic medal alive, and his efforts bore fruit as the Indian players kept their cool in the shoot-out, winning 4-2. Sreejesh made two big saves in the shoot-out as well.

After their win over Great Britain, India will face either Germany or Argentina in the semi-finals of the Paris Olympics 2024.
