In 2021, when the Summer Games took place in Tokyo, the Indian hockey team returned home with a glorious bronze medal. For a nation that has won eight gold medals (the most for the nation across all sports at the Olympics), this might not be a huge achievement. But considering the efforts that were put into place by the entire squad, it certainly was.
A vital member of that contingent was midfielder Manpreet Singh. Notably, Singh will also represent India at the Paris Olympics in 2024 and is one of the senior members of the squad alongside goalkeeper PR Sreejesh.
Along with Sreejesh, Singh will be taking part in his fourth Olympics campaign, a feat that was previously held by legendary hockey player Dhanraj Pillay.
Manpreet Singh, who, apart from being a dynamic midfielder, is also a former skipper of the national team, said:
“Playing in my fourth Olympics is a dream come true and a milestone that fills me with immense pride. It is a testament to years of hard work, dedication, and unwavering support from my family, coaches, and teammates.
"To follow in the footsteps of a legend like Dhanraj Pillay, who has been an inspiration for countless players including myself, is an honour beyond words," he added via Hockey India News.
“I am excited to give my all for India in Paris, representing not just the team but the hopes and dreams of millions of fans back home. Our team is ready to show the world the spirit and strength of Indian hockey. We have prepared rigorously, and we are determined to perform at our best, bringing honour to our country and making our countrymen proud."
Manpreet Singh says "no pressure" on the Indian hockey team
The Indian hockey team might have won bronze but their recent mix of performances might be a sight to behold. But at the same time, India has this reputation of delivering its best at the grandest stages. When asked if the pressure would be there to replicate the heroics from Tokyo, Singh replied:
"There is no pressure on us; instead, we are looking forward to enjoying our performance in every match. We must not underestimate any team, regardless of their ranking. Each team will bring their best to the field, and so will we.”
He further added about the mindset of the side:
“Our focus is on fulfilling our responsibilities and supporting each other as a cohesive unit. We believe that by concentrating on our game and maintaining our composure, we can achieve great results. It's all about playing with passion and determination, without letting pressure hinder our performance."
It remains to be seen if India can better Tokyo's bronze into gold in Paris.
