Is Thunder Punch Goodra good in Pokemon GO Battle League?

Thunder Punch in Pokemon GO is an Electric-type Charged Attack that costs 40 energy and deals 55 damage in trainer battles. The Great League is the only arena where the addition of this move is expected to have much impact.

In Pokemon GO's Great League, with one shield play on each side, Goodra won 18 of 41 meta matches with its previous moveset. The addition of Thunder Punch instead of Power Whip gives it additional wins against Altaria, Pelipper, Poliwrath, and Shadow Poliwrath.

In the Ultra League, the most impactful change comes from running Thunder Punch and Draco Meteor. Compared to the original moveset, this one is better at closing out matches when zero shields are in play.

In the Master League, Goodra with Thunder Punch has little to no utility. The Aqua Tail variant outclasses the one with Thunder Punch in every possible scenario.

Is Thunder Punch Goodra good in Pokemon GO raids and gyms?

In PvE, the move deals 45 damage for 33 energy and has an animation duration of 1.8 seconds. The move isn't the most popular pick when thinking of Electric-type Charged Attacks as players would prefer to use stronger moves like Thunderbolt and Discharge.

Goodra barely ever comes to mind when thinking of Dragon-type attackers. Even when it makes the cut, Thunder Punch—which doesn't even benefit from STAB when used by Goodra—is one of the last moves that should be considered.

To get Goodra with Thunder Punch, you must evolve Sliggoo into Goodra during Goomy Community Day between 2 pm and 10 pm local time on June 9, 2024. If you miss this eight-hour window, you must either wait till the next event featuring Goodra's exclusive move (tentatively the December Community Day). Alternatively, you have to expend an Elite Charged TM to teach Goodra Thunder Punch.
