Deshaun Watson seems to be lashing out after his slow start in the Washington Commanders game. In the game against the 3-1 Commanders, the 1-3 Cleveland Browns are having trouble scoring points.
When the incident happened, the Browns were trailing 7-0. It was 3rd and 10 and Deshaun Watson decided to run the ball. But after rushing for 5 yards, Commanders rookie DB Mike Sainristil pushed him out of bounds with a hard hit.
Even though it was a clear and legal hit, Watson gave a little push to Sainristil and players from both sides joined in and it turned into a fight on the sidelines. Eventually, all the players broke off on their own and the game resumed on 4th down and 5 to go with less than two minutes left in the first quarter.
In the next play, kicker Dustin Hopkins managed to secure a 51-yard field goal, cutting the Commanders' lead to four points. But, at the time of writing, the Commanders hit back and secured a touchdown taking the score to 17-3, with two minutes left on the clock before halftime.
Deshaun Watson refuses to run the ball more
With the Browns struggling this season, fans and the media have suggested that the team switch things up, since the current playbook is clearly not working. It has been suggested that Watson should be more mobile, and run the ball, but the QB does not want to oblige.
"I'm not going in there to ask them for more designed runs. ... if I don't have to run, I'm not going to run. I'm not trying to take any hits. ... I'm not a running quarterback, in a sense. I can make things happen, but I'm not trying to run." (H/T ESPN)
He even hit back saying that he was not a running back and was not going to run the ball and that he was going to stick with his role as quarterback and play caller.
"They signed me to throw the ball, make decisions and be a quarterback, not a runner."
Per Deshaun Watson, he won't be running the ball because of the shoulder injury he had suffered last year, which ended his 2023 season. Since running the ball would open him up to more hits, it would be best if he stuck to passing the ball and called running the ball a "lose-lose situation."
