Stephen A. Smith and Jerry Jones have been on two opposite sides for quite some time. Seemingly every time the Cowboys lose, Smith teases the team. Meanwhile, when the Cowboys have a good week, Smith claims that the success will hit a wall. Smith's comments on an Oct. 15 edition of "First Take" fit into the first category.

Speaking on the program, Smith metaphorically slapped Jones on the wrist for lashing out at radio hosts in an interview on 105.3 The FAN via "First Take". Here's what Jones said.

0:00 Jones: "You have got to be smoking something over there this morning. Your job isn't to let me go over all the reasons that I did something and I'm sorry that I did it. That's not your job. I'll get somebody else to ask these questions," Jones said.

Smith entertained Jones' side of the story that the team had some other names he wanted to see and give a chance. However, in the end, Smith scolded Jones' discourse.

3:41 Stephen A. Smith: "And so when you look at it from that standpoint, is he getting feisty? Is he ultra sensitive? ... 'I'll get somebody else to ask the questions.' Let me say this to Jerry Jones, and you know I love you, Jerry. Come on, bro. You're better than that," he said.

Jones has taken criticism for most of the year as analysts questioned when he was going to sign Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, Micah Parsons and Mike McCarthy to new deals, as well as bring in big new pieces for the roster. With the team sitting at 3-3, those criticisms have borne fruit.

Jones' Cowboys were riding high at the end of the 2023 season after snatching the division crown from the Philadelphia Eagles at the last moment. However, the team was dealt an eye-opening blow after losing to the Green Bay Packers in Jordan Love's first playoff game.

Now, not two months' worth of games later, the team once again finds itself several steps behind a respected NFC opponent in the form of the Detroit Lions. Heading into the game, the Cowboys seemed to be in range for a wide range of good outcomes. Following their 47-9 loss to Jared Goff, many would agree that a Wild-Card berth is their new (lower) ceiling.

Of course, that assumes the Cowboys haven't stumbled into handing out a blueprint on how to be beaten. If that is the case, Dak Prescott's unit might be closer to the top pick in the NFL Draft than the playoffs. That said, there are plenty of weeks remaining and still likely plenty of twists and turns ahead. Will the Cowboys right the ship?
