Odell Beckham Jr. is reportedly on his way to joining the Dallas Cowboys with the playoffs weeks away.
The most coveted free agent on the market was linked to the team for weeks on end, but it appears the two parties may be closer than ever to a resolution. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spoke to USA TODAY this week to say that the free-agent receiver will soon be wearing a Cowboys jersey.
Jones said:
“Odell’s going to join us. There’s a good chance he will, with the complete goal of getting ready for a playoff game or two, and then I’ll look to the future. But most of it being about now.”
The Cowboys owner didn’t disclose any financial information but said he expects Beckham Jr. to be signed to a contract for the remainder of the season.
The star receiver is coming off ACL surgery after getting injured in Super Bowl 56 while suiting up for the Los Angeles Rams. Jones noted that the deal could become official after the Cowboys face the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 15.
The Cowboys are in prime position to make the playoffs with their 10-3 record leaving them second in the NFC East. Dallas is currently 20th in passing yards per game at 215.2 yards. Signing the three-time Pro Bowler would give quarterback Dak Prescott another weapon, making for a potent offense.
Odell Beckham Jr Cowboys move could bolster an already potent offense
Odell Beckham Jr. would likely find himself as the team's number two receiver behind CeeDee Lamb.
Lamb leads the Cowboys in targets (117), receptions (74), yards (961), and touchdowns (six). The next closest in yards is Noah Brown (484) while tight end Dalton Schultz is second in both targets (61) and receptions with 41.
Last season, Beckham Jr. had 44 receptions, 537 yards, and five touchdowns in 14 games with the Cleveland Browns and Rams.
If he signs on the dotted line, the Dallas Cowboys might just have found that second wideout to complement Lamb in OBJ after trading Amari Cooper this offseason.
Whenever the signing becomes official, we'll see if Odell Beckham Jr. is the missing piece for the Cowboys. If so, Jones could soon have his first Lombardi Trophy in nearly three decades.
