Dak Prescott has been the Dallas Cowboys quarterback for almost a decade, and while he has brought a lot of joy and some excellent play at times, the fact that he has been unable to bring a trophy to the franchise, just like Tony Romo, is starting to wear more and more the fanbase.
This wouldn't be much of an issue in normal years, but Prescott is entering the final season of his four-year, $160 million contract in 2021, and it looks like both sides are far apart on a new deal. The idea of Prescott playing for another team isn't absurd anymore. Unlikely? Sure. But not impossible.
NFL analyst Mike Garafolo, from NFL Network, has highlighted a possible issue with the contract negotiations that might be a factor outside of any money, leverage, or duration: the fact that being the Cowboys' quarterback puts you under a lot of pressure. And Dak Prescott might be done with this - just like Tom Brady was once done with the Patriot Way:
"To me, it's not monetary. It's the lore of being the quarterback of the Cowboys, and who knows he may be done with it. At some point, Tom Brady was done being quarterback for the Patriots and wanted to go somewhere else. He may say, 'You know what, depending on how the season goes, enough of this. I've got the chance to go elsewhere. Let me go elsewhere with a lot less noise.' And I don't know I'm projecting. But that may be part of it. He may want to play this out and say 'let me see what my options are.'"
Dak Prescott's salary
Dak Prescott is in the final season on a four-year, $160 contract he signed before the 2021 season. He has a base salary of $29 million for 2024 while holding a cap hit of $55.45 million, the highest on the Cowboys' roster and the second-highest in the entire league for 2024.
The team might be looking to pay him around the $50 million mark this time, but the Dallas Cowboys quarterback is certainly looking to earn around the $55 million that Trevor Lawrence received in recent negotiations. Whether the sides can bridge that gap remains to be seen.
