Jackson County fans rejected a sales tax that would have funded Arrowhead Stadium
Jackson County fans rejected a sales tax that would have funded Arrowhead Stadium's renovation costs.

There’s a possibility that the Kansas City Chiefs won’t remain in Missouri after Jackson County voters rejected a new sales tax that would help fund Arrowhead Stadium’s renovations. BroBible NFL writer Dov Kleiman tweeted the news, saying that Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals could also consider switching homes.

This development had one football fan commenting:

“Clark Hunt is a cheap sack of sh*t 🤣😭🤣😭🤣 fund your own stuff dude.”

The Chiefs and Royals ownership pledged a $266 million “Community Benefits Agreement” for Jackson County. However, it will be valid only if the residents vote in favor of extending the sales tax to finance Arrowhead’s upgrades.

Meanwhile, another NFL fan posted:

“Trash ownership (unsurprising).”

Here are some other reactions from fans on X to the major news that could dictate the four-time Super Bowl champion’s fate in Kansas City:

New plans for Arrowhead Stadium’s renovation came after the team received several failing marks in the NFL Players Association’s Report Card for 2024. They received an F in Nutritionist/Dietician, Locker Room, Training Staff and Ownership. The only A+ grade they received was for head coach.

Meanwhile, BroBible’s Garrett Carr wrote on March 27 that Hunt disputed the alleged promise to renovate the locker room, saying it was a miscommunication.

Chiefs team president, Kansas City mayor, “no” voters react to the result

KMBC News 9 reported that 58 percent of the voters, or 78,352, rejected the new sales tax, while 56,606 voted yes.

In an article by KMBC’s Nick Sloan, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said after the “no” vote won:

“The people of Kansas City and Jackson County love the Chiefs and the Royals. Today, they rejected plans and processes they found inadequate.
"Over the months ahead, I look forward to working with the Chiefs and Royals to build a stronger, more open, and collaborative process that will ensure the teams, their events and investments remain in Kansas City for generations to come.”

Meanwhile, Kansas City Star sports columnist Sam McDowell reshared Chiefs team president Mark Donovan’s statement:

“We feel we put forth the best offer for Jackson County. We will look to do what is in the best interest of our fans and our organization as we move forward.”

Finally, as shared by The Athletic’s Nate Taylor, KC Tenants union leader Michael Savwoir expressed his frustration regarding the proposed sales tax:

“Two billion dollars in taxpayers money, man, could do a hell of a lot to develop our community. The billionaires don’t finance my follies. Why should I finance theirs?”

This looks set to be an ongoing storyline for the franchise, which is in the middle of a dynasty.
