Mike Florio spells doom for Rams if Matthew Stafford's extension stalls

Veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford will enter his fourth season as the Los Angeles Rams quarterback this season. He signed a four-year, $160 million contract extension prior to the 2022 NFL season and has three more seasons left on his current deal.

While he's under contract for three seasons, his current contract only has $31 million remaining in guaranteed money. Stafford is currently looking for a new or adjusted contract.

The Rams and head coach Sean McVay understand that Stafford wants more long-term security and have said they are committed to him and that a deal is imminent.

ProFootballTalk senior analyst Mike Florio spoke about Stafford's contract situation on The Pat McAfee Show and thinks chaos could erupt if they don't extend him.

"Rams keep saying it's coming. It's coming. If he (Matthew Stafford) doesn't get it, would he really take a stand and not show up? I don't think it's in his DNA. But sometimes you have to take that stand to get what you deserve. And when Jared Goff got to $53 million a year and he's the guy that they basically gave up a first-round pick to get rid of when they traded for Stafford and he's at 40. He's clearly due for an adjustment.
"Sean McVay talked about it a couple of times, 'Hey, we're not going to go year to year with Matthew Stafford. We're going to give him a commitment beyond this season'. It hasn't happened yet. Now it's a deadline-driven league and maybe it happens just as they're getting ready to go to camp. But if it doesn't, does Stafford say, 'Hey, look guys, I've made this clear, what I want we know what the market is. Are you going to do it?'"

Stafford enters this season at 36 years old and has led the Rams to two postseasons, including a Super Bowl victory. The Rams may not be the most confident in extending him given his age.

It will be interesting to see if the Rams adjust or extend Stafford's contract before the start of the season.

What other quarterbacks, aside from Matthew Stafford, are due for contract extensions?

Matthew Stafford isn't the only quarterback due for a contract extension/altered contract.

Quarterbacks such as Jordan Love, Tua Tagovailoa and Dak Prescott are due for extensions this off-season too. Each of the three will become free agent quarterbacks next off-season, and it's better for business and team purposes to get their deals done before the start of the season.

This off-season, we've seen quarterbacks such as Jared Goff and Trevor Lawrence get extensions that paid them more than $50 million per season. Some think the quarterbacks above could potentially get contracts north of $60 million per year.

With many quarterbacks looking for contract extensions, who do you think will receive an extension first?
