Is Patrick Mahomes a Christian? A look at Chiefs star's religious practices

NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes might be dealing with an ankle ailment, but that hasn't prevented the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback from praising God ahead of the Super Bowl.

Mahomes earned the NFL MVP award for the 2022 campaign on Thursday night, doing so for the second time in his career. He will now prepare to face the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl on Sunday (February 12).

Mahomes said that his religion guides his actions on and away from the gridiron, during a press session at the midweek Super Bowl celebrations in Glendale, Arizona.

The 27-year-old doesn't anticipate being constrained on Sunday. In the divisional round win against the Jacksonville Jaguars, he suffered an ankle injury. He was visibly impaired in the win over the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC championship contest but still managed to throw for 326 yards and two scores.

After the game, Mahomes said that God had given him the ability to play through the pain.

"Man, I want to thank God. He repaired my body," he told Tracy Wolfson of CBS. "He gave me the energy to come out here, so I could fight through that."

Patrick Mahomes has become famous through football, but he has never wavered from his commitment to his Christian faith.

"I feel that my spirituality has developed over the last few years," he said during Super Bowl press activities. "And I believe that has helped me understand who I am and why I play the game I do more."

Mahomes additionally disclosed that the design of one of his tattoos was influenced by the Acts 20 account of Eutychus, a man who perished after falling out of a window while attending a sermon by Paul. The story, according to Mahomes, is "about having a mixed relationship with God."

He added:

"You can't be half in and half out. And so, the Bible scripture has stayed with me and has sort of indicated to me that I must be totally engaged."

The Super Bowl on Sunday will mark the first time both teams will have black starting quarterbacks, but it isn't the only thing the two QBs have in common.

Eagles QB Jalen Hurts seems to be just as devout as Mahomes and has acknowledged the role God has played in his life.

He remarked:

"I've just grown up and realized God is everything, and he deserves the honor. You must place Him at the heart of everything you do."

Patrick Mahomes has guided the Kansas City Chiefs to three Super Bowl games in his first five seasons as starting quarterback. Tom Brady is the only other quarterback in NFL history to achieve that.

When the Chiefs play the Eagles, they will look to win their second Super Bowl in the last four seasons. Patrick Mahomes has clearly included God and prayer in his preparation.
