Daniel Jones' former WR refutes claims Giants QB was behind his career-year production

New York Giants v Arizona Cardinals
Daniel Jones' contributions for Richie James questioned

Daniel Jones has lacked elite wide receivers during his career with the New York Giants. The position has been one of the biggest weaknesses on their roster, specifically missing a No. 1 option for their quarterback. He has instead adapted his game with more role players than anything else.

One wide receiver who played with Jones was Richie James, who had a career year with the Giants. A fan on X pointed out that James turned in a much better performance in New York with Jones than he did with Patrick Mahomes when he joined the Kansas City Chiefs. The fan also stated that Jones "made" James have his career year.

James responded:

"DJ didn't make me. Still have to get open and the ball thrown your way. BTW I hope he throws for 5K. Loe playing with Pat, but when you have TK, paid WR's, and second-rounders, I believe you have to get them the ball more, even if I am open. It is a business."

Richie James believes his efforts were at least as important to his breakout year with the Giants as Daniel Jones. He also explained that the presence of Travis Kelce and being surrounded by other solid wide receivers limited his workload with the Chiefs.

The veteran described that the difference in his output was not the quarterback he was playing with, but rather the rest of the supporting cast around him. Regardless of the reason, his one season with the Giants was the best of his career by a significant margin.

Richie James spent the first three seasons of his career with the San Francisco 49ers. In those three years, he never exceeded 25 receptions or 400 yards in a single season. He then joined Daniel Jones on the New York Giants for his fourth season and broke out in a major way.

In his lone season with the Giants, James turned in 57 receptions for 569 yards and four touchdowns. This includes having more receptions and touchdowns in just one year with the Giants than he did combined across his three seasons with the 49ers. Despite his success with his new team, he departed for the Kansas City Chiefs during the offseason. He recorded just 10 receptions for 114 yards and zero touchdowns in his first season with his new team.
