On January 2, 2023, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest after making a tackle playing against the Cincinnati Bengals. He was hospitalized in critical condition.

Hamlin returned to the football field on August 12, 2023, in the Bills' preseason opener against the Las Vegas Raiders. Hamlin played five games for the Bills last season as a backup safety.

Heading into the 2024 season, Hamlin will be featured more in Bill's defense. Coach Sean McDermott told reporters on Wednesday that Hamlin will start at safety in the team's season opener against the Arizona Cardinals this Sunday.

Upon hearing the news, many fans think the Bills secondary is concerning. While Hamlin is certainly worthy of being on an NFL roster, many people don't view him as a quality starting safety. Some think the Cardinals will have a field day on the Bills' defense while thinking they will also upset the Bills.

Here's how NFL fans reacted to Hamlin being listed as a starting safety on the Bills' depth chart:

"Arizona by 40," one fan wrote.
"Oof there safety situation is quite bad then. He was literally inactive for big swathes of last year," a fan replied.
"Bills defense is cooked," one person wrote.

While some fans think the Bills secondary/defense may be in trouble, other fans think the Bills aren't in as much trouble.

Fans showed their respect and are rooting for Damar Hamlin. Fans are hopeful that Hamlin will improve on the field and are looking forward to seeing him play.

Here's how other fans reacted:

"Great story, hopefully he can make positive impact on the field," one fan wrote.
"He left a lot to be desired when he filled in for Mycah Hyde. Hopefully he does better with this 2nd chance," a fan wrote.
"What a story congratulations young man," a fan said.

Many thought Damar Hamlin would win the 2024 NFL Comeback Player of the Year, but he didn't. Joe Flacco was named the Comeback Player of the Year after leading the Cleveland Browns to the playoffs. Hamlin, like a lot of people, also thought he should have won the award.

During an appearance on Maggie and Perloff earlier this year, Hamlin spoke out, saying his journey wasn't something a trophy can define.

"I heard about that," Hamlin said. "I heard some people were in an uproar. I did at first, I’m not gonna lie... I clapped for Joe as he went on stage and clapped for him as he went off. . . . It wasn’t something that a trophy can define.”

Damar Hamlin will be gearing up for his fourth NFL season. In three seasons and in 34 games played, Hamlin has recorded 95 tackles, 1.5 sacks, six tackles for a loss, four pass deflections and one forced fumble.

How do you think Hamlin will do in his start this Sunday?
