"Just months after signing a 3-year, $121.5M extension…WOW" - NFL fans left shocked by Raiders' decision to bench Derek Carr

Las Vegas Raiders QB Derek Carr

Derek Carr made headlines in shocking news for the wrong reasons entering Week 17 of the 2022 NFL season. The Las Vegas Raiders quarterback has officially been benched for their upcoming game and presumably for the remainder of the year. This is even more surprising considering Carr recently signed a brand new 3-year contract extension worth $121.5 million prior to the 2022 season.

NFL fans quickly went on social media to share their thoughts on the news of Carr being benched less than a year after receiving his new contract with the Raiders. Here are some of the top comments from Twitter.

Derek Carr helped the Raiders reach the NFL playoffs in 2021. His strong 2021 season, which resulted in a playoff berth, is a big reason why he was given a contract extension prior to the 2022 season.

The offseason additions of Davante Adams and Chandler Jones created extremely high expectations for the Raiders' quarterback for the 2022 season. He was expected to lead them back to the playoffs and possibly even emerge as a Super Bowl contender. However, he has failed to meet expectations, while also having a pedestrian season.

The failure to meet team expectations, paired with severe statistical regression, led to Derek Carr being benched with two games remaining in the 2022 NFL season. The Raiders currently hold a disappointing 6-9 record, while Carr leads the NFL with 14 interceptions. New head coach Josh McDaniels has apparently seen enough as he announced a quarterback change moving forward.

Who will replace Derek Carr as the Raiders' starting QB in Week 17?

Las Vegas Raiders QB Jarrett Stidham

Jarrett Stidham has officially been named the starting quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 17 against the San Francisco 49ers. Stidham will make the first start of his NFL career and will do so against the best defensive unit in the NFL by many statistical measures.

Head coach Josh McDaniels is familiar with Stidham as they spent time together with the New England Patriots. Stidham served as a backup for Tom Brady and Mac Jones in 2019 and 2020, while McDaniels was their offensive coordinator. This may have impacted his decision to bench Derek Carr and give Stidham a shot at the starting job.
