How long has Derek Carr been in NFL? Exploring Saints QB's career

Freshly signed, New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr has been in the National Football League (NFL) for nine years. The Fresno State University alum was drafted by the then-Oakland Raiders as a second-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft.

Following his selection, Carr quickly became the undisputed QB1 for the Raiders. He couldn't lead them to the playoffs in his first season, but at least he gave Raiders fans something to cheer about. He put up a stat line of 3,270 passing yards, 21 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

The rest of Derek Carr's career with the Raiders went similarly to his rookie season, as he put up decent stats, but the team couldn't make any noise in the postseason. There were years when he was selected to the Pro Bowl and other years when he ought to have been selected to the Pro Bowl.

A typical Derek Carr season would see him put up 300+ completed passes, 3,900+ passing yards, 20+ touchdowns and about ten interceptions without making the postseason. These stats are alright for an average quarterback, but unfortunately, they didn't show signs of entering the upper echelon of Carr's heralded position.

At the end of the 2022 season, Derek Carr was released by the Las Vegas Raiders to preserve cap space and finally move on from him as their starting quarterback.

That was a surprise around the league, as Carr was previously seen as an untouchable for the Raiders. So how did he perform in his last season in Las Vegas?

How did Derek Carr perform last reason?

Derek Carr entered the 2022 NFL season with a chip on his broad shoulders and something to prove as the starting quarterback of the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Raiders had just signed his friend and former teammate, Davante Adams, from the Green Bay Packers. Adams is a perennial All-Pro wide receiver and one of the best pass-catchers of his generation.

As such, a lot was expected from the newly formed QB and wide receiver duo, with a postseason appearance being the bare minimum.

Unfortunately for Derek Carr and the Las Vegas Raiders, Carr endured arguably the worst season of his career in 2022.

He never truly grasped the Josh McDaniels offence, and eventually, the former New England Patriots coach announced that Carr would be relieved of his starting duties ahead of week 16 of the season. That essentially spelled the end of Carr's Las Vegas career, and the franchise in the offseason eventually released him.

Carr put up a stat line of 3,522 passing yards, 24 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 15 games that season. He left the team as their all-time leader in career, passing yardage and touchdown pass marks and single-season mark in passing yards (4,804 in 2021). He's the only signal-caller in the team's history with multiple seasons reaching the 4,000-yard mark.
