Russell Wilson missed the Pittsburgh Steelers' first five games of the season due to a calf injury. However, the seasoned quarterback has expressed optimism that he may play in Week 6 now that he's back in practice.

"I feel confident that I'd be ready to play and ready to play at a high level," Wilson said during the week. "I think we're being really smart, too, and trying to understand how it feels. It's my first week really back with the guys. I feel really confident about that."

Wilson has already catapulted himself into the running to start for Pittsburgh this coming weekend after participating in two complete practices this week. Additionally, coach Mike Tomlin has also said that the “door is ajar” for the former Seattle Seahawks QB to be active on Sunday.

Justin Fields started the first five games of the season for the 3-2 Steelers, with Wilson filling in as the emergency QB3 and Kyle Allen as the QB2.

Considering that Russell Wilson hasn't participated in a game this season, it's possible that the Steelers wouldn't want to start him right away. He will likely replace Allen as the QB2 in Sunday's Week 6 matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders, though.

Is Russell Wilson still the Pittsburgh Steelers' first-choice quarterback?

There were whispers in the offseason over which quarterback, Russell Wilson or Justin Fields, would start for the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, those speculations ended when Mike Tomlin selected Wilson as the team's starting quarterback just before the season began.

Meanwhile, Fields has started each of the first five games of the season as Wilson was battling with a calf problem that made him unable to play. Now that Wilson is back fit, many might be wondering if he has lost his place as the team's starter.

When asked, Tomlin restated his refusal to discuss conjecture or speculations regarding Russell Wilson's position as starting quarterback. However, he did add that Fields would continue working with the first team during this week's practices, while Wilson would only train with the second offensive unit.

Based on every indication, Fields is expected to stay the starting quarterback in Week 6. It is now unclear if he will be able to hold onto that position past this week.

The Steelers began the season with three straight victories with Fields at center, but they have now lost their last two games. Fields has completed 67.6% of his passes for 961 yards this season in those outings. He has also rushed for 172 yards.

It's important to note that Fields’ performance level dropped significantly in the last game. He completed a season-low 55.6% of his throws for a total of just 131 passing yards in Week 5's defeat to the Dallas Cowboys. It could be possible for Wilson to regain his QB1 role sooner rather than later if Fields continues to play like this.
