2024 fantasy football TEs to avoid

Tight ends are often the most difficult position to navigate during each fantasy football season. With the exception of just a few elite players, most of the options are extremely difficult to trust in weekly lineups. This makes it crucial for managers to properly analyze the position before making a decision on who to target on draft day.

Past individual performances alone can't always predict future success as each new season brings a different set of circumstances for every player. Personnel changes and projected team roles can play a major factor in fantasy outlook for a specific season. Keeping this in mind, here are five tight ends to avoid in 2024 despite their recent success.

#1 - TJ Hockenson

TJ Hockenson has been one of the best fantasy tight ends over the past four years, finishing among the top five players in his position for season-long scoring in three of them. The issue is that he suffered a catastrophic knee injury late last season, which has put his availability in jeopardy this year.

It's unclear when he will be ready to make his season debut, and when he does, he will also need to overcome a likely diminished quarterback situaton.

#2 - Brock Bowers

Brock Bowers was one of the most hyped up prospects in the entire 2024 NFL Draft class. In terms of his fantasy value, the Las Vegas Raiders were not an ideal landing spot for him. They failed to solve their quarterback issues this season and also drafted another top tight end prospect in Michael Mayer last year. Bowers is talented, but his situation is questionable.

#3 - David Njoku

David Njoku enjoyed a breakout season last year with the Cleveland Browns, finishing as a career-best TE6 overall. The potential problem is that it is only the second time in his seven-year career that he has finished among the top 12 tight ends, making him a back-up in fantasy lineups in most seasons.

He also has newly-acquired weapon Jerry Jeudy to compete with for targets this season in the Browns' passing hierarchy.

#4 - Dalton Schultz

Dalton Schultz remained a consistent contributor in his first season with the Houston Texans aftter leaving the Dallas Cowboys. He may have benefited from some injuries to their pass-catchers, but his role is likely to significantly decrease for the 2024 season.

The Texans are expected to get Tank Dell back and also added Stefon Diggs to their roster, making targets much harder to come by for Schultz.

#5 - Cole Kmet

Cole Kmet has finished as the oveall TE7 in each of the past two fantasy football seasons. This year he will need to deal with major changes to the entire Chicago Bears offense, including a quarterback change and new offensie weapons.

The Bears replaced Justin Fields with rookie Caleb Williams and surrounded him with the additions of D'Andre Swift, Keenan Allen and Rome Odunze. Kmet's role is is much riskier to trust this season in essentially a brand new offense.
