Each fantasy football season presents a new set of circumstances for every NFL player. Situations change each year and they can significantly affect fantasy values. Just because a player has a strong performance in their most recent season, it doesn't necessarily mean a bright outlook when a new year arrives.

Running backs have always been among the most important players when constructing a fantasy roster. Determining who to target is based on many different factors, with recent history being just one of them. Ignoring the other variables can sometimes lead to a player being overvalued at their ADP, including the following five running backs for the 2024 fantasy football season.

#1, Alvin Kamara, ADP: 46, 2023 stats

Alvin Kamara ranks as the RB17 and 46th overall player in 2024 fantasy football drafts, according to his current ADP. He has finished among the top 20 running backs in season-long scoring in each of his seven seasons with the New Orleans Saints, including an RB14 finish last year. This included 1,160 scrimmage yards and six total touchdowns.

The issue with Kamara's fantasy outlook this season is the potential emergence of Kendre Miller, who the Saints drafted last year. He spent much of his rookie season injured, but finished the year with his best overall performance in his final week. He may have earned himself a significant workload in 2024, making Kamara a fade at his current ADP.

#2, James Conner, ADP: 57, 2023 stats

James Conner has finished each of his three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals among the top 20 fantasy players in his position. This has solidified his spot in the fantasy football running back rankings and has made him the RB20 and 57th overall player to target in drafts, according to his current ADP.

Conner was solid again last year with 1,205 scrimmage yards and nine total touchdowns, despite missing four games with an injury. The issue is that he is entering the final year of his contract and the Cardinals recently drafted Trey Benson. They could be transitioning away from Conner, and considering they have been rebuilding, Benson may get a shot at a significant workload.

#3, Rachaad White, ADP: 34, 2023 stats

Rachaad White enjoyed a breakout season in his second year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, finishing as the overall RB7 in fantasy football. His strong output included 1,539 scrimmage yards an nine total touchdowns. His 64 receptions were a major factor in his fantasy value, especially in PPR formats.

The negative side of White's 2023 season is that he averaged just 3.6 yards per carry. This may be why the Buccaneers selected Bucky Irving in the 2024 NFL draft. If the two work as a backfield tandem as they are projected to do, White could see much less playing time this year. This makes him a fade at his current ADP as the RB13 and 34th overall player.

#4, Aaron Jones, ADP: 54, 2023 stats

Aaron Jones ended his streak of four consecutive seasons among the top 12 fantasy running backs last year, but some of that is due to him missing six games with injuries. When he finally got healthy, he ended the 2023 season with three straight finishes of RB17 or better. He totaled 406 scrimmage yards during that impressive three-game stretch.

Despite his success with the Green Bay Packers, Jones switched teams to the Minnesota Vikings during the offseason. This could negatively impact his fantasy outlook in a weaker offense. He is also expected to split the backfield touches with Ty Chandler, so he may be better off avoided at his ADP of RB18 and 54th overall player.

#5, Raheem Mostert, ADP: 75, 2023 stats

Raheem Mostert currently ranks the RB25 and 75th overall player in fantasy football drafts this year, according to his ADP. He is coming off of the best season of his career in his second year with the Miami Dolphins, finishing as the overall RB2. His 21 total touchdowns were a huge reason why, but he also recorded 1,187 scrimmage yards on 234 touches.

The biggest issue with Mostert's potential to have another massive fantasy football season is the competition for touches in the Dolphins' backfield. De'Von Achane flashed elite upside when he was healthy last year and the team also drafted Jaylen Wright to add even more depth to their running backs. Mostert is unlikely to be their featured back, making him a fade this season.
