A new record for most Cup cars involved in a wreck was birthed at the 2024 YellaWood 500 from Talladega Superspeedway. The record-breaking wreck collected 28 cars, including Joey Logano’s No. 22 Ford Mustang, on lap 184.

Talladega is one of two superspeedway races on the NASCAR Cup Series calendar. With the unpredictable racing on this type of track, drivers like Christopher Bell are not fond of it being part of the playoff schedule.

The Big One at The Brickyard started after the No. 6 Ford of Brad Keselowski hit the back of the lead No. 2 Ford of Austin Cindric, causing the latter to spin out. Cindric then crashed with teammate Joey Logano before collecting the rest of the field, with race officials tallying 28 cars in the wreck.

Multiple playoff drivers, including Chase Elliott, Chase Briscoe, Tyler Reddick, and Alex Bowman, were also involved in the record-breaking wreck.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. crossed the finish line for the win ahead of Keselowski by 0.006, securing his second win at Talladega. Stenhouse Jr. was the first car Cindric hit in the multi-car crash but he kept his No. 47 JTG Daugherty Racing Chevrolet Camaro on the track.

William Byron, Kyle Larson, and Erik Jones rounded the top five. Byron scored enough points to secure a spot for the Round of 8.

Joey Logano dropped to 9th in the playoff standings and -13 below the cutline. He switched with Tyler Reddick who is now above the line (+14) in 7th. Meanwhile, Daniel Suarez, Austin Cindric, and Chase Briscoe remain at the bottom of the standings.

“It’s not anybody’s fault” - Joey Logano shared his thoughts on the multi-car crash at Talladega

Joey Logano was one of the drivers who did not finish at the Talladega following the record-breaking wreck. While his DNF dragged him below the cutline, the No. 22 driver did not blame anyone for the huge crash involving 28 cars.

In an interview after Logano got out of his car, the driver said everyone was just competing hard as the race was coming to an end.

“Everyone just gets more aggressive at the end of the races. The 2 got out there a little more than what he has been, 21 gave me a shove and transferred that to the 6. You can’t see who’s in front of you from there. Got into the 2 in a fair amount of steam there.” [start of the video]

He added:

“It’s nobody’s fault. It’s not Brad’s fault. It’s not anybody’s fault. It’s just the product of races we got and [we] got more and more aggressive as the laps wind down and it happens.”

Joey Logano sits below Chase Elliott in the playoff standings in 9th (-13), with the No. 9 HMS Chevy driver +13 above the cutline in 8th.

The Team Penske driver is eyeing to bounce back at the final race of the Round of 12 at Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course. It is the second and final road course race scheduled for this year’s postseason.
